FMP: Statistics on Music Genre Popularity (Target Audience Research)

As part of my target audience research for my music video that I am creating for my FMP this year, I looked up statistics about the popularity of music genres in the U.S. and how they show that the genre of Rock is a very popular genre within certain demographics (Max, 2019) and why it should be considered at least a fairly popular genre of music. The data in the bar chart from a survey conducted by Audio Mentor U.S. conducted in 2018 shows that Rock music is most popular with 45-54 year olds with its highest percentage of 48%, 25-34 year olds are second highest with the percentage of 44%, a percentage of 42% for the age group of 35-44 year olds which is the age group that is the third most popular with the genre, 39% of 20-24 year olds enjoying Rock make the age group the fourth most popular with the genre, 55-64 year olds make up 31% of the Rock genre statistics making them the fifth most popular, 16-19 year olds are 28% of the fans of the Rock genre (sixth most popular) and 17% of the fans of the genre are 65+ years old (seventh most popular).

This research implies that based on the song, the age demographic that will mostly be interested in my music videos will be 45-54 year olds (48%) because the band who made the song I am using, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, are a Psychedelic Rock band so because the music is Rock they will enjoy it for that reason at least. However, if Indie/Alternative music fans also enjoy the styles and aesthetics of Indie/Alternative music videos it is quite possible they may also enjoy my music video as it has a lot of similar traits to archetypal music videos of the genre with the way it will be filmed, the location it will be filmed in and how it will be edited so it is very possible that the 40% of 20-24 year olds who consume music from the Indie/Alternative genre the most will take an interest in my music video because of the similarities it possesses.

(Max, 2019)

In this survey about the leading music genres in the U.S. in 2018 conducted by Deezer (Max, 2019), it shows that the Rock genre is the leading music genre with a total of 56.80% beating the total of 56.10% that the Pop genre has by just 0.70%. The only other genre that comes close to Rock and Pop is Country with 49.90%, only 6.20% less than the second highest leading music genre which is Pop so that shows that Rock and Pop are the most mainstream genres in the U.S. and they will likely continue to stay the most popular in years to come, trading first and second place quite frequently while doing so. This shows that Rock music is enjoyed by a lot of people so it makes sense for me to create a music video for my FMP with the song as a Rock song because it is one of the genres with the most influence and presence in the U.S. right now. Also, often a lot of music that becomes popular in the U.S. becomes successful in other countries around the world, including the UK so making my music video for the song I have chosen is a very logical and well thought out decision.

(Max, 2019)

This pie chart about the statistics of the world's favourite music genres (Max, 2019) shows that Rock is the world's second favourite music genre and the favourite music genre is Pop according to the research conducted by Edison. This is slightly different to the statistics for the favourite music genres of the U.S. however as the difference between Pop and Rock is a lot bigger in the statistics for the world's favourite music genres as it 7% instead of the 0.70% difference between Pop and Rock in the U.S. leading music genres bar chart. I think the main thing the pie chart shows is that across the whole word while Pop music may have quite a bit more people who prefer it to Rock, Rock is still very far ahead of the third favourite music genre in the world Dance/Electronic/House music at 32% which is 25% less than Rock music.

So although it may not be the biggest music genre in the world it is still a close second and it is definitely the favourite music genre of countries independently much like it is the U.S's favourite music genre. The age demographic of my music video that I am creating for my FMP this year is definitely a mix between 45-54 year olds and 20-34 year olds because of the appeal of the music and the Indie style of it too. My gender demographic does not exist because my music video isn't made for a one gender specifically to enjoy it is for anyone who can relate to the situation the male finds himself in which anyone of any gender could find themselves in. I believe the psychographic analysis of my music video is that people who are more introverted and spend a lot of their time alone as they prefer it to being the centre of attention in a social setting.

The socio-economic aspect could feed into their personality as I think their Social Grade would most likely be C1, C3 and D as they may not be very wealthy which makes them naturally more reserved as they can't afford to go out and spend a lot money anyway. This leads me to believe their geodemographic would be generally cheap housing, maybe on a council estate or a economically damaged village/town. Obviously, people who are rich can also suffer with serious negative emotions but they are more likely to have the resources in place and ability to acquire the assistance required in order to help deal with any mental health issues that could arise so people who are closer to the poverty line should be prioritised before them in my opinion.
