Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and with the lockdown put in place by the UK Government I am physically unable to go to any galleries/museums in person so instead I have decided to use the article (Wilson, 2020) that Marissa posted on the Facebook group about museums and art galleries around the world that you can essentially visit online. From the article I chose the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, The Netherlands which has a total of eighty galleries with many historical objects and pieces of art complimented by the very modern lighting and glass-roofed atrium that can be found in the museum thanks to the ten year renovation that was completed in 2013. I find the section of the website that shows works that are in the Rijksmuseum (The Hague School - Styles - Rijksstudio - Rijksmuseum, n.d.) that goes into detail about The Hague School which is a term used to describe a group of painters who were all active in The Hague, a city in the west of The Netherlands, between approximately 1860 to 1890 with artists such as Jozef Israels, Maris Mauve and his brother Anton Mauve painting both landscapes and portraits often painted with greyish tints that creates a gloomy atmosphere over the pieces of art that are all based around nature and how beautiful it really is by attempting to capture the feeling and light of a landscape through their paintings.
The Hague School were inspired by the French Barbizon School because of their use of en plain air (out in nature) which inspired them greatly much like The Hague School artists inspired me with the prettiness of the scenery depicted in the art with natural scenes of the landscape also making for visually beautiful pieces of art. More specifically, the works of art that I find the most inspiring that are a part of The Hague School movement are Woodland Pond at Sunset by Gerard by Gerard Bilders (1862), Morning Ride along the Beach by Anton Mauve (1876) and Fishing Pinks in Breaking Waves by Hendrik Willem Mesdag (1875-1885) as what they all have in common is the landscape is the focus of the art, with the people in the art being subtly visible in what is overall a genuine picturesque scene of a visually stunning place.
