Task 2.2: My Media Related Work Experience and Media Enrichment

For task 2.2, I am listing the media related work experience and media enrichment I have done while on this course achieving a UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Film and TV Production as well as summarising what I did as part of the work experience/enrichment I have taken part in over the last two years and how it has benefited me and enhanced my knowledge of the media industry.

Work Experience

Firstly, I worked as a production runner and an actor (extra) for New Wave Short Films on a shoot for a TuitionKit advert in February 2019, firstly as a production runner involved helping the crew move the equipment around that they were using to film the adverts, making and/or bringing beverages to the crew/cast as they filmed and generally just being there to help with anything that needed to be done on set which was unspecific and general enough that a runner would be able to do it. However, then as an extra my job was a lot more specific since it required me to act as a student waiting in a line for a teacher to let students into a classroom and working in the back of a classroom as a student which didn't involve any speaking so it wasn't too challenging since I just had to channel the anxiousness of a student before an important exam using my facial expressions and body language only which wasn't very difficult because my demeanor is naturally neurotic.

A few months later, I also worked as a camera operator for Unique Media TV at the British Rowing Junior Championship 2019 (July 2019) during which I worked the camera at the finish line for two days (a weekend) capturing the final moments of the races while also switching with someone every three hours on average, but then going back onto the camera after a break of about an hour and although I did have breaks there was still a lot of standing up done which required a lot of effort and dedication to perform the role as well as I possibly could.

Enrichment

My experiences of enrichment started in year one, with the first being at the beginning of the year (October 2018) when the majority of the first year of the Level 3 Film and TV Production course and some of the members Level 3 Journalism course traveled to MediaCityUK in Salford, Greater Manchester to be a part of the live studio audience for five episodes of the game show Countdown during which we played along as we were given a piece of paper and a pencil to try and answer the anagrams and equations in the show. The main reason for going to Dock 10 to witness the the recordings of Countdown that we did was to gather a better understanding of the way the show and television shows similar to it operate, as well as to see the way the crew members work together to keep the show running too, in order to be more prepared and knowledgeable when/if we work in the same type of environment in our careers in the media industry.

After that, the visits to BBC Nottingham (London Road) where BBC East Midlands Today and BBC Radio Nottingham are based were the next form of enrichment that happened, or at least it was the first time I went since that was in January 2019 and the second time was in January 2020. However, what the happened during the tours of the building were essentially the same going to a room to watch a live broadcast of East Midlands Today with the live feeds of every camera playing on a television showing the gallery and what is happening in there as well, basically giving a behind the scenes look of what goes into a live broadcast of the news and how the crew works to keep the show running smoothly. This made it especially interesting when during my second visit, as the timer used to count the seconds left of a VT/live studio bit malfunctioned so they had to count it manually instead which was a good test of teamwork and perseverance for the crew that we witnessed.

After that, the radio station studio rooms and TV studio (and the gallery) were toured, with explanations of how the equipment in each room works and when they are used for radio shows/news broadcasts, meeting Anna Church who explained the journey that lead her to her BBC meteorological job and what she does as part of it on both of the tours. Also during the second visit, we walked past one of the newsreaders for East Midlands Today, Dominic Heale on the stairs when leaving so the second time touring the building was definitely the more interesting tour. But overall, I feel like both of the visits were good opportunities to get a realistic insight into what it takes to get to the position of working at that level in the media industry but also what attributes are needed to keep working at that level of pressure and prominence.

Then there was industry week at the beginning of March 2020 which had lectures from Junior Assistant Producer of Sky Sports Boxing Jake Meskell and Clare Tavernor from Phono Films who directs and produces the projects made by the company. The talks involved them explaining what they do in their jobs, how they got their jobs in the media industry and what the positives and negatives of their jobs are. Last year in March 2019, a former student called Manny Bahra also came in and spoke to Level 3 Film and TV Production students about his work and how he transitioned from Nottingham College to the media industry as well as showing us part of his portfolio, Jake and Clare showed us some of their work too to give us a visual representation of their creativity and dedication they have for their work instead of just describing how passionate they are about what they produce.
