Video Installation: Idea and Proposal

Disconnected

  • It is about when you get into a certain state of mind things can almost feel polarizing, too intense and too realistic, because your mind is so hyper-focused as a result you become detached from reality because you mentally isolate yourself from normal human emotions and acting in a sincere and genuine way.

  • Blue screen/green screen a pattern onto objects and onto a male's body or clothes (which will probably be my body/clothes) or onto a male's body part onto it.

  • I will use the blue/green paint or the blue/green clothes or material and I will then use chroma key technology (ultra key in Premiere Pro CC 2019) to put the pattern onto objects and person's body's body or clothes/material.

  • Objects may include- toothbrush, tieing your shoes, drinking a bottle etc.

  • Body parts may include- hands, face, legs etc.

  • Moving painting- the same shot but you have the person (probably me) moving closer and further away from the camera introducing with the objects in whatever way suits the narrative I decide on and what daily tasks I end up including in my video installation.

  • I am going to match the audio to what the daily tasks are and I am going to distort the audio slightly too.

Proposal

Moving Painting/Animation/Objects/People

A moving painting, a young male (probably me) and all of the props I am going to use in my video installation to represent actions that we all do in our daily lives which includes using a toothbrush, drinking from a water bottle, eating part of a sandwich, crisps and a chocolate bar and pretending to usea video games controller.

Concept- What is it about? What are you trying to say to your audience?

It is about feeling disconnected from the world and getting into a particular state of mind and developing a certain mentality where you're still continuing to function normally but mentally you are struggling and not with it completely. I will have a young male doing daily tasks such as brushing his teeth, drinking a bottle of water, tieing his shoes, using a video games controller and have the young male painted in green or blue partly at least or in green or blue clothing so that I am able to use chroma key technology by using the Ultra Key video effect in Adobe Premiere Pro CC to effectively green/blue screen a pattern onto the young male that represents the feeling of being detached from reality really well while he is doing all of these mundane actions. The pattern will not change, only the position of the young male and the tasks he's performing will be different.

Content- What effects you might use e.g. Split Screen/Black and White/Transitions

  • Chroma Key Technology (Ultra Key in Premiere Pro CC). (It was originally going to be the case but unfortunately not anymore)

  • Color Balance (RGB), Color Balance (HLS) and/or Lumetri Color used to counteract the colour of the pattern in the background to make the male feel out of place as well as possibly making the contrast and exposure very high in an attempt to portray the intensity that the male feels due to feeling disconnected from the world and from life against the melancholy feeling of being detached represented by the pattern on the green screen behind the male.

  • Jump cuts after every action the young male does is finished or once it has been done to a good effect in order to get across what it is he's actually doing.

  • Audio will be slightly distorted to match the feeling of being disconnected and self-isolated from the world and its true meaning for working the way it does and how you are included in it yourself and why you are in the position you are within it.

Use of Visual Codes- Colours/Lighting/Props/Images

  • Dark lighting except for the bright spotlight focused on the young male.

  • The pattern however will be colourful and it will be pattern that visually matches the feeling of being disconnected as perfectly as possible.

  • Props- toothbrush, bottle of water, shoes, phone, video games controller

Soundtrack- What sound will you use? Diegetic/Non-Diegetic

I will use diegetic sounds because the audio I'm using is the audio of the daily tasks being done but slightly distorted and also not necessarily matched up with the video completely correctly in order to create the feeling of being confused and maybe slightly unnerved by the unconventional placing of the audio but it is done in an attempt to replicate the feeling of detachment.

Who is your audience? Think Demographics

My audience is teens/young adults because my video installation concerns mental health and how it can result in making people become numb to their emotions and how the pressures of the world can gradually build up and become too much for a person to handle. As a result they can become stuck in a loop and a routine of simply just carrying on with their normal everyday lives when they are actually struggling to keep it together and if they are keeping it together they're doing it to the detriment of themselves, they are doing it just for the sake of carrying on. I feel as if my video installation will attract people who are more actively engaged in the arts, highly educated and affluent as well as people who are interested in a broad range of arts, particularly contemporary arts.

Note: The idea of me chroma keying a pattern onto my body to represent feeling disconnected is unfortunately not possible to execute and make work however I will instead project patterns onto the green screen behind the male and I will add the Color Balance (RGB), Color Balance (HLS) and/or Lumetri Color in order to oppose the colour of the pattern that represents blissful acceptance that is being displayed on the green screen behind the male with how intense and almost surreal he and the props in his hands will look.
