The pieces of research that I completed this week were Practical Developmental research and Gallery Research, with the Practical Developmental research being me experimenting video effects such as Color Balance (RGB), Lumetri Color and Lens Distortion creating a very psychedelic and relaxed feeling over the video as the way I imagine my FMP visually is with beautiful shots inter cut with disorientated and almost overstimulating shots of urban scenery and buildings you would find in any village/town in order to create an enjoyable contrast between the two shots and their different type of camera movements but not to a degree where they are unwatchable and generally unpleasant. Then, the gallery research I did was done online by using a link to an article that Marissa shared on the Facebook group about art galleries and museums that have online tours and ways of viewing the art that is in the art galleries and museums. I decided to look at pieces of art from the Rijksmuseum and more specifically art created during The Hague School period which I decided to look in more detail about the meaning behind the art and how the gloomy landscapes that are associated with the style of The Hague School are similar to theme of what will be my music video for my FMP as it’s either light green or yellow colour mixed with the visuals being based mainly around the place in a shot and not so much the subject, but with the subject still being a part of the shots but just more subtly.
I would say that the way my idea has developed over the course of this week is that I actually have a solid concept which is about a man wondering the streets in a highly delirious and confused state, looking at fields (of grass or corn), village/town centres, shops/pubs/bars/clubs/restaurants and buses/bus stops. I also decided on the song for my music video for my FMP and I decided on the song Swim and Sleep (Like a Shark) by Unknown Mortal Orchestra as I feel that the lyrics and sound of the song goes really well with my idea. The way I am going to incorporate superimposing along with the chaotic, relaxed but also melancholic shots that I am also including in my FMP will make for an interesting yet not too complicated viewing of my music video which overall I hope will have a chilled out atmosphere while you watch it. However, except for finally figuring out what I want my idea to exactly be, the only other new contributions to my idea that I came up with was the inspiration from my gallery research with the pieces of art I cited as something similar to what I am aspiring to create myself because the way the paintings are set out is quite similar to how I want to shoot some of my FMP. The only other things that I have related to my idea over the last week are particular shots and aesthetics from the music videos for the songs Heartless by The Weeknd and How Soon Is Now? by The Smiths as the former includes similar shots of a distorted face and a man intoxicated wondering around Las Vegas whereas the latter has the almost grainy aesthetic in some of the shots (especially the ones with a blue light) that I hope I can replicate as well as the shots of buildings shot at a quick pace that definitely make me want to use similar shots and techniques that are used in those shots in my own music video for my FMP.
I think that I have done quite well to get the work that I have completed done to the standard that I have completed it to this week. What I mean by that is my work is just as good as it usually but because of the COVID-19 pandemic causing the college to close and the country to go into lockdown I have felt a lot less motivated and not as focused as I would be in college which I think has without a doubt has had an effect on the quantity of work I have produced over the last five days. However, I did achieve some of the targets I set myself last week since what I stated I was going to work on this week was pre-production, research and my pitch presentation and I said that I would get two or three pieces of pre-production done this week which I did as I finished my mind map, project proposal and project action plan and timetable. Although, I definitely overestimated how much of the research I could get finished in a week as I only got two pieces done, my practical developmental research and gallery research which I am happy with but I am making sure I complete more research next week as well as starting my pitch presentation too while doing a bit more pre-production next week too and I believe as long as I keep my morale up as high as I physically and mentally can I will be able to get the work done that I’ve set myself to do to a standard that I am very pleased with.
