FMP- Weekly Reflection (Week 3)

For research this week, I completed my director research, inspiration research, legal research and art and wider inspiration. For the director research, I looked at Jennifer Juniper Stratford and Garth Jennings who are both directors that I feel are both very distinct with their style of directing as well as having their own aesthetics that they are well known for which is shown in the music videos they have directed that I chose as examples as I believe they show their unique personal appeal best. Then, for inspiration research I found the music video for the song “Heartless” by The Weeknd to be a good source of inspiration as the concept of wandering around a place in a state of bewilderment and uncertainty is very present in the music video as well as the Dutch tilts that are used to put an emphasis on the euphoria that the male is feeling due to the intensity of the emotions he is feeling while he wonders the streets of Las Vegas. I plan to incorporate the following aspects into my FMP this year along with a recognizable visual style of my own that I can continue with on future projects as well, much like the faded and colourful aesthetic that can be seen in the music video for the song “How Soon Is Now?” by The Smiths.

Also, in many other pieces of their work too, such as the album covers for the self-titled album “The Smiths” and the album “Strangeways, Here We Come”. I researched about the details of copyright and plagiarism for legal research, looking at the consequences of disobeying the rules/laws put in place to stop them from happening. My final piece of research that I did this week was art and wider inspiration and for it I decided to talk about the video game Meadow that I own with the way its objective of just discovering the world around you and how strange the design of the game has influenced my music video for my FMP both conceptually and stylistically. I found all the research I did helpful because of how varied and specific it is to my FMP which I think is beneficial as it will make it easier to make sure it is exactly how I want it to be.

The way that my idea for my FMP has developed this week is by me completing more pieces of pre-production to help progress with work that I am putting into it to make it of a quality that I can be pleased with as I want to ensure it is all a good standard so that no part of production feels rushed or incomplete. I produced a crew details and health/dietary needs sheet, music video script and call sheets. My crew consists of a producer, director, first assistant director, production manager, director of photography and production runner with myself taking the roles of producer and director, Harry becoming the first assistant director, the role of production manager taken by Ella, Bela being made the director of photography and Riane being assigned the role of production runner.

The music video script is simply the lyrics to the song “Swim and Sleep (Like a Shark)” by Unknown Mortal Orchestra which is the song I am using for my music video that I am creating for my FMP. The call sheets I have created for my music video are for two separate locations, one is for Market Street in Bingham and the other one is for Chapel Lane in Bingham with the former being filmed later in the afternoon and the latter being filmed early in the afternoon. So, I wouldn’t say I have had any new thoughts necessarily, but I have made progress with my pre-production and research this week without a doubt.

I have worked well this week in my opinion since I have met my target of completing more research and getting a bit of pre-production done so I am happy about what I have achieved. However, I feel I need increase the speed at which I complete work next week as I am worried if I don’t, I might not get all of the work done for the deadline on Tuesday 14th April as I am spending too much time on each part of my pre-production and research which is affecting my ability to get other work done. Although, if I spend a significantly less amount of time on the work it may decrease the quality of it and I am very pleased with how good it has been up to this point. I may be misjudging how much work I have left to do and how much time I have left to do it but even if that is case I will still try my hardest to get all of my pre-production and research completed for the deadline to the highest standard I can get it completed to.
