Weekly Reflection- Week 5

sampattison2501

On Wednesday 9th October I finished off my video artist research by researching about Peter Campus (often styled as peter campus), who is a video artist who achieved massive acclaim in the 1970's for his series of video works which explored issues such as identity construction, perception and subversion of the relationship that exists between the viewer and the work. He did move onto traditional still photography later on in his career in the 1980's which took the place of single-channel video and interactive closed-circuit television exhibitions as his main focus. However, he did do a bit of large scale production and investigation of faces and heads as a subject matter of work towards the end of the 1970's. The video art of his that I decided to research was Three Transitions (1973) and R-G-B (1974) and through my research of his work I found what he has created to be very inspirational and interesting because in Three Transitions the use of chroma-keying technology and superimposing video images was innovative and very different, especially for the time period that it was conceived during. Then, in R-G-B the use of coloured filters by Campus is groundbreaking in itself as what he does with the different types of shots he uses and the different techniques he uses in the shots like with his shadow and broadcasting himself onto a television in front of him to see whether what he was trying to achieve was working and whether it was accidental or not, it ended up looking quite unique and visually impressive.

At the weekend, before this week I researched Sam Taylor-Wood and her work and the work that I decided on was The Servant (2007), A Little Death (2002) and Still Life (2001) and while they were all thought-provoking and interesting too none of them gave me any sort of inspiration in the same way that Campus' work did which probably comes down to it being similar to what my idea is which I actually thought of the concept of painting myself and objects in green/blue paint before finding out about Peter Campus and his video art Three Transitions. At the weekend I am going to Middlesbrough to an open day for Teesside University and I am looking at the Broadcast Media Production BA (Hons) Undergraduate course there and it is my first University open day so I am little nervous but mostly excited about looking around the university to see what it is like and whether it is the one for me. Overall, I feel like this week was a good week for me because I feel like I got a good amount of work done and to a good quality that I'm happy with as well despite not being in college due to the strikes going on so I feel like I've done well and produced pieces of work/research that I am pleased with.
