On Tuesday 15th October in the morning in Faye's lesson we started the unit of Dystopian in Films: Fact or Fiction (Unit 9). At the start of the lesson we looked at what a dystopia is and the origin of the word. We then looked at how the most frightening dystopias are actually extensions of our current world and these worlds answer the "What If" questions about the future with the most pessimistic responses possible, we also looked at the concept of 'Used Future' too. Another thing we also looked at was that although these situations seem paranoid they expose important truths about the reality we currently live in. We then typed up all the notes we made onto our blogs, making sure we answer the questions what is dystopia?, what are some of the common fears explored in dystopian narratives?, what dystopian films have you seen? (how did they make you feel? What fears did they explore?), and then went for our break until we returned to the classroom at 10:45am.
Once we got back we made notes about the characteristics of a dystopian society, types of dystopian control (corporate, bureaucratic, technological and philosophical or religious) and 'the dystopian protagonist' too. After that we then got into groups, my group is me, Harry and Matt and we got Marxism to research about and make a presentation and handouts about as well. After making a start on the presentation and handout on Marxism we typed up all the notes that we made from the slides from the PowerPoint in the second part of the lesson onto our blog and then we finished for our lunch break. However, I still need complete the part of my blog where I say what dystopian films I've seen and how they make me feel as well as what fears they explore. In the afternoon after our lunch break had finished, we were with Rob and we started on UCAS and looking at applying for universities through it as well as other opportunities available to people who don't want to go to university (apprenticeships and work with training). We also looked at gap years and gap year ideas too for if you decide to take one and we looked at the possibility of studying abroad and volunteering as well. We touched on the key points of UCAS and looked at the UCAS process itself. We then moved onto looking at researching universities and choosing the right course and the right university based on important factors that affect the education you will receive while at university and your quality of life while at university. Other things we looked at include types of higher education, entry requirements, key UCAS dates, how to apply and personal statements.
In the second part of Rob's lesson after our break we completed a questionnaire that will help Amy help us find the right university and university course. Once Amy who is going to help guide us through UCAS left Rob talked more in detail about personal statements and how to write them, how to make it stand out from everyone else's, questions you need to answer in your personal statement, making your choice of wording in your personal statement interesting and different, skills and achievements, make sure you say why you're applying for your chosen course in your first paragraph and your future plans. He also showed us important websites for us to use to help us find the right course and university as well as potential careers after university and advice with finance and personal statements too. We finished the lesson off by looking up courses on the UCAS website from different universities to get an idea of what course we want to do and where we might want to study. On Wednesday I completed my weekly reflection for week 5 and my first weekly reflection for Faye's unit.
In Marissa's lesson on Thursday in the morning we started researching three video artist (one male, one female and one of our own choice) but I had already researched three video artists while we had been off college due to strikes so I spent the whole lesson adding information about the sound aspect of all of the video arts/installations that I researched to my blog for my video artists research. In lesson we also watched the video art TV Interruptions: Tap Piece by David Hall and the music video for Come To Daddy by Aphex Twin which is directed by video artist Chris Cunningham. Overall, I feel like this week was both very informative and interesting with the first lesson on Dystopia in Film: Fact or Fiction and Rob's first lesson on UCAS helped a lot even if I have already started going on open days and deciding what course I want to pursue and what university I want to go to next year, the he information we were given was really helpful and informative on how to go about it the right way and how to actually apply to go to the university you want to go to. But in Marissa's lesson I had already done what we needed to do so except for watching the two videos we watched I don't feel like the lesson was a very good one for me and I feel like it could have been a lot better. As a whole though the week was good and useful and I feel like what I completed and produced was of a good quality so I am pleased with what I did this week and I am looking forward to the open day at Swansea University that I'm going to this Saturday as I think that it's going to be very good so I'm quite excited about it.
